Free Crochet Pattern: Dragonfly Pullover Sweater

SAM_0558

I’m so excited to share my first pattern with the creative crochet community!  I hope you enjoy making it as well as wearing it.

You will create two separate rectangle panels then seam them together with a double twist in the front so the width of the front panel will be larger than the width of the back panel.  I suggest you create the back panel first as that will help you establish the width and length of the sweater.

Hook:  US size H

Gauge:  9 rows = 4 inches.  17 DC = 4 inches.

Yarn:  Lion Brand Heartland in Kings Canyon (6 skeins) was used to create the sweater you see in the picture above.  Use any type of #4 worsted weight yarn for this project.

Size of finished sweater:  The finished sweater measures about 28 inches wide at the shoulders by 21.5 inches long and have a tapered waist which looks very nice.  The instructions below are for size medium sweater (US sizes 8 to 10).

Crochet the back panel of the sweater first as follows:

CH 113

Row 1:  DC in the 3rd CH from the hook (counts as the first DC) and in each stitch to the end of the chain.  112 sts

Row 2:  CH 2, turn (counts as the first DC), DC in each DC across to the end.  112sts

Row 3:  CH 2, turn (counts as the first DC), DC in each DC across to the end.  112sts

Row 4:  CH 2, turn (counts as the first DC), DC in the next 2 sts.  * DC in the next 4 sts.  CH 1, skip the next stitch.  DC in the next 7 sts.  Repeat from * to the end of the row.  112sts

Row 5:  CH 2, turn (counts as the first DC), DC in the next 2 sts.  * DC in the next stitch.  CH 3, skip the next 3 sts.  SC in the CH 1 space.  CH 3, skip the next 3 sts.  DC in next 4 sts.  Repeat from * to the end of the row.  112sts

Row 6:  CH 2, turn (counts as the first DC), DC in next 2 sts.  * CH 4, skip the next stitch and the CH 3 space.  SC in the SC.  CH 4, skip the CH 3 space and the next DC.  DC in the next 3 sts.  Repeat from * to the end of the row.  112sts

Row 7:  CH 2, turn (counts as the first DC), DC in next 2 sts.  * 4 DC in the CH 4 space.  DC in the SC.  4 DC in the CH 4 space.  DC in next 3 sts.  Repeat from * to the end of the row.  112sts

Row 8:  CH 2, turn (counts as the first DC), DC in each stitch to the end of the row.  112sts

Row 9:  Repeat row 8.

Row 10:  Repeat row 8.

Repeat rows 4 through 10 six times for a total of 7 rows of dragonflies.

To get desired length:  I repeated row 8 two more times to make the length of the sweater approximately 21.5 inches.  If you want to make the sweater longer, repeat row 8 to desired length OR you can repeat rows 4 through 10 to make an additional set of dragonfly rows.

The back panel measures about 28 inches wide by 21.5 inches long.

Crochet the front panel of the sweater next as follows:

CH 149

Row 1:  DC in the 3rd CH from the hook (counts as the first DC) and in each stitch to the end of the chain.  148 sts

Row 2:  CH 2, turn (counts as the first DC), DC in each DC across to the end.  148 sts

Row 3:  CH 2, turn (counts as the first DC), DC in each DC across to the end.  148 sts

Row 4:  CH 2, turn (counts as the first DC), DC in the next 2 sts.  * DC in the next 4 sts.  CH 1, skip the next stitch.  DC in the next 7 sts.  Repeat from * to the end of the row.  148 sts

148 sts

148 sts

Row 7:  CH 2, turn (counts as the first DC), DC in next 2 sts.  * 4 DC in the CH 4 space.  DC in the SC.  4 DC in the CH 4 space.  DC in next 3 sts.  Repeat from * to the end of the row.  148 sts

Row 8:  CH 2, turn (counts as the first DC), DC in each stitch to the end of the row.  148 sts

Front panel measures about 34 inches wide by 21.5 inches long.

Assemble the front and back panel as follows:

Lay the back panel on a flat surface, right side down.  You should be looking at the wrong side.

With the right side facing, lay the front panel on top of the back panel, lining up the left sides of each panel.  The dragonflies on the back panel should line up with the dragonflies on the front panel.  I used clips to hold the panels together on the left side to make it easier to twist the front panel.

If you twist the front panel once, the dragonflies will be upside down on the right front side of the sweater.  In the picture above, the front panel is twisted twice so the dragonflies are not upside down on the right front side of the sweater.

Twist the front panel twice, lining up the right sides of each panel and clip both panels together to hold them in place.

Seam the top of the sweater first.  Seam the two panels together at the top, leaving a 10 inch opening for the neck.  Seams are approximately 9 inches with a 10 inch opening for the neck.  You can adjust the seams for a smaller or larger neck opening.

Next, seam the two panels together along each side, leaving a 14 inch opening for the arms.  Seams are approximately 9 inches with a 14 inch opening for each arm.  You can adjust the seams for a smaller or larger arm opening.

Block the finished sweater.

Enjoy!
